Dr. Maneesh Singh: Pioneering MIGS and Transforming Glaucoma Care in East India

The Patna Ophthalmological Society (POS) recently featured a review article in its official journal, POS Times (Volume 10, Issue 2, April 2026), titled "Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery in India: Current Role, Emerging Devices and Real-World Limitations." Among a select group of India's finest cataract and glaucoma surgeons, Dr. Maneesh Singh stood out as the representative from Bengal and Kolkata invited to provide his expert insights in the journal. As a leading Cataract and Glaucoma Surgeon, Dr. Singh’s contribution highlights a pivotal shift in how glaucoma is managed in India, particularly for patients facing the dual challenge of cataracts and glaucoma.

An Expert in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

In his featured article, Dr. Maneesh Singh explores the evolution of MIGS, a surgical revolution that bridges the gap between medical therapy and traditional, more invasive filtration surgeries.

Key takeaways from Dr. Singh’s expertise include:

  • The Paradigm Shift: Why MIGS is becoming the "gold standard" for patients with early to moderate glaucoma who are already undergoing cataract surgery.
  • Precision in Practice: Insights for cataract surgeons on identifying the correct indications and selecting the most suitable MIGS procedure for individual cases.
  • Specialized Expertise in KDB and BANG: Dr. Singh shared his vast clinical experience with the Kahook Dual Blade (KDB) and Bent Ab Interno Needle Goniectomy (BANG)—techniques known for their safety, efficacy, and rapid patient recovery.

Excellence in Glaucoma Care Across East India

Dr. Maneesh Singh is widely recognized as one of the few surgeons in India—and a handful in Kolkata—to have successfully performed hundreds of MIGS procedures. His reputation is built on a foundation of managing some of the most complex and high-risk glaucoma cases in the region.

"The goal of MIGS is to provide an intermediate surgical option that enhances safety while delivering effective intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction." — Dr. Maneesh Singh, POS Times, 2026.

Why Dr. Maneesh Singh is a Leader in the Field:

  • Unrivaled Experience: Over 15,000 successful eye surgeries, including 5,000+ glaucoma-specific procedures.
  • Academic Leadership: Former Honorary Treasurer of the Glaucoma Society of India and author of the acclaimed "Clinical Handbook of Glaucoma."
  • Commitment to Training: Having trained dozens of glaucoma fellows and conducted 40+ workshops, he is a primary catalyst for the upliftment of glaucoma care standards across Bihar, Bengal, and East India.

HYDRUS MICROSTENT
Dr. Maneesh Singh - Kolkata

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) is rapidly becoming a breakthrough treatment for glaucoma patients who need safer, faster, and more comfortable surgical options. Compared to traditional glaucoma surgery, MIGS offers minimal tissue damage, faster recovery, and a significantly lower risk of complications, making it an excellent choice for early to moderate glaucoma.

On 9th November 2025, a new advanced MIGS device “Hydrus” was officially launched in India. Hydrus represents a major step forward in glaucoma treatment with its micro-invasive design, long-term pressure control, and improved safety profile.

Dr. Maneesh Singh was invited as one of the top glaucoma experts from East India to receive first-hand access and hands-on experience with this latest MIGS technology. He was among only 20 doctors selected across India to perform a wet-lab training on the Hydrus device. His participation highlights his mission to bring cutting-edge glaucoma solutions, modern surgical techniques, and safer treatment outcomes to patients.

World Glaucoma Week celebration
World Glaucoma Week celebration
Dr. Maneesh Singh - Kolkata

Dr. Maneesh Singh was invited as a speaker at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Calcutta Medical College, during the World Glaucoma Week celebration, where he interacted with postgraduate ophthalmology students and discussed the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, focusing on modern approaches to early detection, clinical evaluation, and surgical management of glaucoma.

Dr. Maneesh Singh discussed with postgraduate students and faculty members on glaucoma diagnosis, glaucoma surgery, and the latest advancements in glaucoma surgical management. During the program, he delivered two academic presentations. The first focused on how to diagnose glaucoma, emphasizing early detection, clinical evaluation, and modern diagnostic techniques that are critical in preventing irreversible vision loss caused by glaucoma.

The second presentation addressed how to perform glaucoma surgery, particularly focusing on newer glaucoma surgical techniques and the management of difficult glaucoma cases. The session discussed the role and indications of various surgical approaches, including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), glaucoma implants, and trabeculectomy, and how these procedures can be selected appropriately depending on the clinical situation and severity of glaucoma.

Reflecting on this occasion also brought back an important memory. World Glaucoma Week was initiated by the World Glaucoma Association in 2008, and Dr. Maneesh Singh, who was a glaucoma consultant at Sankara Nethralaya, had organized a glaucoma awareness program during the first World Glaucoma Week in 2008 (then termed World Glaucoma Day).

Since 2008, he has remained keenly involved in glaucoma awareness programs, glaucoma education, and the training of postgraduate ophthalmology students, with the aim of improving early diagnosis of glaucoma, promoting appropriate glaucoma surgical management, and strengthening glaucoma care and prevention of blindness.

Events like these reinforce the importance of glaucoma awareness, ophthalmology education, and continuous medical learning in the collective effort to prevent blindness caused by glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.”

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery
A significant academic contribution to glaucoma literature has come from Dr Maneesh Singh, whose review article, "Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery – An Indian Perspective," is published in the Journal of Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal. The article delivers a clinically balanced and evidence-based analysis of Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) within the realities of Indian ophthalmic practice.

Why This Article Matters

Glaucoma affects over 12 million Indians, with many patients presenting in moderate to advanced stages. While MIGS has gained global attention as a safer and less invasive alternative to traditional glaucoma surgeries, Dr. Maneesh stresses an essential principle:

Technology should follow disease need — not marketing influence.

When MIGS is Appropriate

  • Mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma
  • Patients undergoing combined cataract and glaucoma surgery
  • Individuals intolerant to long-term glaucoma medications
  • Cases where moderate intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction is sufficient

Procedures such as iStent, Kahook Dual Blade, BANG, and GATT are discussed, with emphasis on implant-free, low-cost MIGS options suitable for India.

Where Traditional Surgery Remains Superior

  • Advanced glaucoma
  • Eyes requiring very low target IOP
  • Rapidly progressing disease
  • Secondary glaucomas
  • Failed previous surgeries

These procedures provide stronger and more reliable pressure lowering, crucial to prevent irreversible vision loss.

Focus on Cost-Effective Glaucoma Care in India

  • Rational procedure selection
  • Avoiding marketing-driven surgery choices
  • Prioritizing long-term outcomes and affordability

Academic and Clinical Leadership

  • Laser glaucoma procedures
  • MIGS surgeries
  • Trabeculectomy
  • Glaucoma drainage devices

His expertise spans mild to moderate glaucoma as well as severe and refractory cases, reinforcing individualized surgical planning.
